Escárcega is not a destination most travellers plan to visit. It is a transport junction — a place you pass through on the way to Calakmul, Palenque, the Río Bec ruins, or the Tren Maya. But if your route through Campeche State involves a bus transfer or an overnight stop, understanding how this station works saves time and prevents missed connections.
This guide covers the ADO bus station specifically: its location, the operators and routes that serve it, what to expect inside, and how to link bus travel with the Tren Maya and onward journeys south.
The Station
Escárcega main plaza, a short walk from the ADO station
The ADO bus station sits on Avenida Revolución in the centre of Escárcega (postal code 24350). It is a modern, single-storey terminal with a clean waiting room, ticket counters, a small restaurant on site, and basic restrooms. The station is not large — you can walk from one end to the other in under a minute. A taxi stand is directly outside, and the main plaza (Parque Miguel Hidalgo) is a few blocks away.
The station's coordinates are approximately 18.60934° N, 90.74497° W. It is centrally located within the city, so food, ATMs, and budget hotels are all within walking distance. A Pemex gas station sits roughly 200 metres west of the terminal.

Operators and Service Frequency
Several bus companies run through Escárcega, but ADO dominates the schedule with the most frequent departures and the widest route network. The secondary operators — ATS, Sur, and TRT — typically run one bus per day on specific routes, which can work if your timing aligns but leaves little room for error.
ADO is the primary carrier on the Campeche–Escárcega corridor, running approximately 4–5 direct buses daily. ADO GL (the semi-luxury brand) also serves some routes through the station. AU operates the shorter regional runs, particularly the Escárcega–Xpujil leg that connects travellers to the Calakmul gateway.
If you are booking online, most ADO and ADO GL services appear on the main ADO website and app. AU tickets are harder to find digitally — buying at the station counter on the day of travel is common for that operator.
Key Routes and Fares
Escárcega sits at the junction of Federal Highways 261 and 186, which makes it a natural transfer point for four main corridors. Fares below are approximate and based on recent economy-class pricing; first-class and ADO GL tickets cost more.
Escárcega ↔ Campeche City
The most heavily used route. ADO runs direct buses throughout the day, with departures roughly every 2–3 hours from early morning through evening.
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Distance | ~137 km |
| Duration | ~2 hours 15 minutes |
| Frequency | 5+ daily (ADO) |
| Economy fare | ~330–350 MXN (~USD 18–20) |
| Route | Highway 261 via Champotón |
Sample departures (subject to change): 01:00, 02:00, 04:55, 12:20, 18:15. The route passes through Champotón, where some buses make a brief stop. The road is paved and generally in good condition, though speed bumps (topes) appear near towns.
Escárcega ↔ Villahermosa
The eastward run into Tabasco. ADO and AU both serve this corridor, with ADO GL offering a slightly higher comfort level on some departures.
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Distance | ~240 km |
| Duration | ~4 hours 30 minutes |
| Frequency | 6 daily (ADO + AU combined) |
| Economy fare | ~560–600 MXN (~USD 30–37) |
| Route | Highway 186 east |
Sample departures: 16:55, 22:00, 23:25 (ADO). This route crosses into Tabasco and terminates at the ADO terminal on Avenida Francisco Javier Mina in Villahermosa. The road is flat and straight for most of the journey, passing through sparse ranchland.
Escárcega ↔ Xpujil
The critical link for Calakmul-bound travellers. AU operates this route twice daily, with the journey following Highway 186 south through the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve.
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Distance | ~153 km |
| Duration | ~2 hours 20 minutes |
| Frequency | 2 daily (AU) |
| Fare | ~210–410 MXN (~USD 12–23) |
| Route | Highway 186 south |
This is the bus connection that feeds Xpujil, the gateway town for Calakmul. If you are arriving from Campeche by bus and need to reach Xpujil the same day, you will transfer at Escárcega. Check the AU schedule carefully — with only two daily departures, a missed connection means waiting overnight.
Escárcega ↔ Cancún
A long cross-peninsula run. ADO operates this route, connecting Escárcega to the Quintana Roo capital via Campeche or via Highway 186 through Chetumal, depending on the specific service.
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Distance | ~550 km (via Campeche) |
| Duration | ~10 hours 55 minutes |
| Frequency | 7+ daily (combined operators) |
| Fare | ~1,200–1,400 MXN (~USD 67–78) |
This is a full-day journey. Most travellers breaking it up overnight in Campeche or Chetumal rather than doing it in a single sitting.
Escárcega ↔ Chetumal
ADO runs approximately 4 buses daily on this southbound route along Highway 186. The journey takes about 4 hours and costs roughly 350–400 MXN. This is the overland link to the Bacalar lagoon and the Belize border crossing at Subteniente López.
On-Board Experience
ADO buses on the Escárcega routes are standard first-class coaches: reclining seats, overhead air conditioning (often set cold — bring a light jacket), a restroom at the rear, and overhead luggage storage. Larger bags go in the underfloor hold; keep valuables and anything you need during the journey in the cabin.
ADO GL buses offer slightly wider seats and more legroom, but the difference on a 2-hour run is marginal. The economy-class ADO service is perfectly adequate for the Escárcega–Campeche leg.
Wi-Fi is advertised on ADO services but unreliable in practice, particularly on the Highway 186 corridor south of Escárcega where cell coverage drops. Download offline maps and entertainment before boarding.
AU buses on the Escárcega–Xpujil route are more basic — older coaches with functional air conditioning and less padding in the seats. The ride is still comfortable enough for the 2-hour journey, but do not expect the same standard as ADO first-class.
Connecting to the Tren Maya
The Escárcega Tren Maya station (Estación Escárcega, Concordia) is located approximately 1.5 km east of the ADO bus station. This is a full-service station with two platforms, ticket sales, baggage check, a VIP lounge, and an Oxxo convenience store. It is a key transfer point where three Tren Maya lines converge — trains to Cancún, Chetumal, and Palenque all pass through here.
Bus-to-train transfer: A taxi between the ADO station and the Tren Maya station takes about 5 minutes and costs roughly 30–50 MXN. Allow at least 45 minutes between your bus arrival and train departure to account for the taxi ride, ticket purchase (if not bought in advance), and platform access.
Important booking note: When using the Tren Maya to reach the Calakmul ruins, book your ticket to Xpujil station, not "Calakmul" station. The Calakmul station is isolated deep in the jungle with no services, no taxis, and no onward transport. Travellers who book it are stranded 60+ km from Xpujil with no way to continue. Xpujil station is the correct stop — from there, local shuttles and taxis connect to the ruins.
Connecting to Xpujil and Calakmul
If you are arriving at Escárcega by bus from Campeche and need to reach Calakmul the same day, the connection chain is:
- Bus Campeche → Escárcega (ADO, ~2h 15m, ~330 MXN)
- Bus Escárcega → Xpujil (AU, ~2h 20m, ~210–410 MXN)
- Shuttle/taxi Xpujil → Calakmul ruins (~60 km, ~1h, ~400 MXN round trip)
The total journey from Campeche city to the Calakmul ruins takes a minimum of 6–7 hours of travel time, not including transfers. Most visitors break this into two days, overnighting in Xpujil. Attempting it as a day trip means arriving at the ruins with only a few hours of daylight remaining — the site closes in the late afternoon.
GuideCalakmul Travel Guide: Biosphere Reserve and Maya MetropolisCalakmul is a vast Maya city inside a biosphere reserve near Campeche's southern border, best approached with an overnight near Xpujil rather than a rushed day from the capital. This guide explains driving times, reserve fees, what to expect at Structure II and the stelae groups, wildlife etiquette, and how Calakmul compares to easier day trips like Edzná. It covers dry-season road notes, guide options, and how to slot Calakmul into a longer Campeche itinerary when you have two or more days for the jungle south.OpenPractical Tips
Buying tickets: ADO tickets can be purchased online at ado.com.mx, through the ADO app, or at the station counter. For AU services, the station counter is more reliable than online booking. During peak holiday periods (Christmas, Easter, summer), book ADO tickets at least a few days ahead.
Cash vs card: The station accepts card payments at ADO counters, but smaller operators and the on-site restaurant may prefer cash. ATMs are available in the city centre near the plaza — use them before heading to the station, as there is no ATM inside the terminal itself.
Food: The small restaurant inside the station serves basic Mexican food — tortas, coffee, soft drinks. For a better meal, walk 5–10 minutes toward the plaza where there are local eateries and a market. El Inge, on the highway east of town, is a known stop for truckers and serves solid regional food.
Overnighting: If you are stuck overnight in Escárcega (a missed AU connection, a late arrival), budget hotels are within walking distance of the station. Ah Kim Pech is about 230 metres southwest. Expect to pay 500–900 MXN for a basic room. The city is safe at night by Mexican standards, but there is little reason to wander far from the station area after dark.
Taxis: The taxi stand outside the station serves both local rides and longer trips to the Tren Maya station. Fares are not metered — agree on the price before getting in. A ride to the train station should cost 30–50 MXN; a ride across town no more than 60–80 MXN.
Time zone: Escárcega operates on Central Standard Time (UTC-6) year-round. If you are arriving from Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Chetumal), note that state observes Eastern Time (UTC-5) — clocks shift by one hour at the state border. Your phone may not update automatically.

Escárcega is a functional transit point, nothing more. Arrive with a clear plan, know your connection times, and carry enough cash for the smaller operators. Do that, and the station does exactly what it is supposed to do — moves you onward to the places in Campeche State that are worth the journey.
