Reaching Calakmul from Campeche city is a long but straightforward journey when you plan it right. The ancient Maya city and its surrounding biosphere reserve sit roughly 290 km southeast of the walled capital, deep in the jungle near the Guatemalan border. There are no shortcuts — every route passes through Escárcega or Xpujil, and the final stretch into the reserve is a slow jungle road. But the payoff is one of the most remote and rewarding archaeological sites in Mexico.

This guide covers every realistic way to make the trip: direct bus, rental car, private transfer, and multi-modal combinations using the Tren Maya. All routes end at Xpujil, the last town with services before the biosphere, and the launch point for the final 60–110 km into the reserve.

Understanding the Route

No matter which transport mode you choose, the geography dictates the journey. From Campeche city, you travel southeast on Federal Highway 180 toward Champotón, then continue on Highway 186 through Escárcega. At Escárcega, Highway 186 turns east toward Xpujil and eventually Chetumal. Xpujil is the gateway town — the last place with fuel, ATMs, hotels, and food before you enter the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve.

The total distance from Campeche city to the Calakmul archaeological site is approximately 290 km by road. Of that, roughly 230 km gets you to Xpujil, and the remaining 60 km is the jungle road from the highway turnoff to the ruins themselves. That final section inside the biosphere is narrow, winding, and slow — budget at least 1 hour for it, more on your first visit.

By Bus

The bus is the most affordable option for solo travellers and couples. ADO and Autobuses Sur operate services from Campeche's terminal to Xpujil, the gateway town for Calakmul.

Campeche → Xpujil (direct): The direct bus takes approximately 3 hours 30 minutes to reach Xpujil, covering the 280 km route via Highway 186. Departures run multiple times daily. Expect to pay around 300–500 MXN per person for a first-class seat. The buses are comfortable coaches with air conditioning.

Campeche → Escárcega → Xpujil (with transfer): An alternative is to take a bus to Escárcega first (roughly 2 hours, 200–250 MXN) and transfer there to another bus heading east to Xpujil (about 2 hours 20 minutes, 160–230 MXN). This route gives you more schedule flexibility but adds transfer time. The total journey typically takes 5–6 hours depending on connection timing.

Practical notes for the bus:

  • Buy your ticket at the Campeche ADO terminal in person — international cards sometimes fail on the website.
  • The Campeche bus terminal is located on Avenida López Portillo, east of the city centre. A taxi from the centro histórico costs around 50–70 MXN.
  • Bring food and water for the journey. There are limited rest stops between Campeche and Xpujil.
  • Arriving in Xpujil by late afternoon means you will not have time to visit the ruins the same day — plan to stay overnight.

By Rental Car

Driving gives you the most flexibility, especially if you want to explore other Río Bec ruins along the way or time your arrival for early-morning wildlife spotting.

The route: Take Highway 180 southeast from Campeche city through Champotón, then merge onto Highway 186 at Escárcega. Continue east on 186 until you reach the Calakmul turnoff at Km 97. From the highway, the road south into the reserve is paved but narrows after the entrance booth. The final 60 km to the ruins is a jungle road — drive slowly, as wildlife crossings are common.

Distance and time: Approximately 290 km total, taking 4 to 4 hours 30 minutes of driving time. Allow longer if you stop at Champotón for breakfast or detour to the Río Bec ruins.

Costs:

  • Rental car from Campeche city: approximately 600–1,200 MXN per day for a compact vehicle, depending on season and insurance.
  • Fuel: budget around 500–700 MXN for the round trip (fill up in Escárcega or Xpujil — there are no gas stations inside the reserve).
  • Highway tolls: there is a 40 MXN per person toll on Highway 186 approaching the reserve.

Driving tips:

  • Fill your tank in Escárcega or Xpujil. Do not count on finding fuel between them.
  • Download offline maps before you leave — cell signal disappears inside the biosphere.
  • Avoid driving at night. The jungle road has no lighting, and animals (including tapirs and deer) are active at dusk.
  • A standard sedan is fine for the main road into the reserve, but a high-clearance vehicle is more comfortable on the final stretch.

From Xpujil to the Ruins

No matter how you arrive in Xpujil, the archaeological site is still about 60 km south of town (roughly 110 km by the full road loop from the highway turnoff). This is the part that catches people off guard — Xpujil is the last stop for services, and the ruins are an hour deeper into the jungle.

Shuttle from Xpujil: A daily shuttle departs Xpujil at 8:00 AM, costing around 400 MXN per person round trip. It is the most practical option for solo visitors. You can book by phone or through local contacts in town. The shuttle can also stop at the Volcán de los Murciélagos (bat cave) if passengers request it.

Private taxi: If you are a group of three or more, a private taxi from Xpujil to the ruins costs approximately 1,200 MXN round trip — comparable to the shuttle on a per-person basis but with more flexibility on timing.

Colectivos: Shared vans run sporadically between Xpujil and the reserve entrance, but they have no fixed schedule. Ask around in town if you are flexible on timing.

Important: There is no food, water, or services at the archaeological site. Bring everything you need for a 3–4 hour visit.

Entrance Fees and Access Rules

Calakmul has a three-checkpoint fee structure that surprises many visitors. You pay at separate booths as you drive into the reserve:

  1. Conhuás ejido fee (community charge): approximately 90 MXN per person.
  2. Biosphere Reserve environmental fee: 110 MXN for national visitors, 215 MXN for international visitors.
  3. Archaeological site entrance (INAH): approximately 100 MXN per person.

Total budget: roughly 300 MXN (national) to 400 MXN (international) per person. All fees are cash-only — bring pesos.

The biosphere reserve is open from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM. No entry is permitted after 3:00 PM, and last access to the archaeological site itself is at 4:00 PM. The site closes at 5:00 PM. Plan to arrive at the reserve entrance by mid-morning at the latest to allow enough time for the drive in and a proper visit.

Combining with the Tren Maya

The Tren Maya adds another option, though it is less direct than the bus for this particular corridor. The train runs from Campeche city to Escárcega (about 2 hours), and from there you can continue east to Xpujil station.

Campeche → Escárcega by train: Departs from the Tren Maya station at San Francisco de Campeche. Travel time to Escárcega is approximately 2 hours. Check the schedule at trenmaya.gob.mx — frequencies change seasonally.

Escárcega → Xpujil by train: From Escárcega, the train continues east to Xpujil station (about 2 hours 40 minutes). The Xpujil station is on the edge of town, with hotels and services within taxi distance.

Critical warning: The Tren Maya has a station called "Calakmul" — do not book this one. It is isolated in the jungle with no services, no taxis, and no onward transport. It leaves you stranded roughly 60 km from Xpujil with no way to continue. Always book Xpujil station.

The train is comfortable and scenic, but the total journey time from Campeche to Xpujil by rail is around 5–6 hours including transfers. It is a good option if you prefer not to drive, but it is not faster than the direct bus.

Guided Tours from Campeche

Several operators run day trips and multi-day excursions from Campeche city to Calakmul. A typical one-day tour includes transport, an English-speaking guide, lunch, and entry fees. Prices range from 3,000 to 5,500 MXN per person depending on group size and inclusions.

Tours are a strong option if you want to avoid logistics entirely. The guides handle the three checkpoint fees, know the site well, and ensure you get enough time at the ruins. The downside is the long day — you will leave Campeche early and return late.

You can book through platforms like Viator or GetYourGuide, or arrange directly with local operators in Campeche city.

Which Option Should You Choose?

Solo travellers on a budget: Take the direct ADO bus to Xpujil, stay overnight, and catch the 8 AM shuttle to the ruins the next morning. Total transport cost: around 700–900 MXN round trip.

Couples or pairs: A rental car makes economic sense and gives you the freedom to explore Becán or Chicanná on the way. Split the car and fuel costs for a per-person cost comparable to the bus, with far more flexibility.

Groups of three or more: A rental car or private transfer is the best value. The per-person cost of a private taxi from Xpujil drops below the shuttle price at three people.

Travellers short on time: Book a guided tour. It is the most expensive per-person option, but it compresses everything into a single day without the overnight stop.

Travellers using the Tren Maya: The train works well as part of a longer itinerary — ride from Campeche to Xpujil, stay overnight, visit Calakmul the next morning, then continue east toward Bacalar or Chetumal.

Practical Tips

  • Cash is essential. The checkpoint fees, shuttle, and small-town services all operate in cash. Withdraw pesos in Campeche city or Escárcega.
  • Fuel up before the reserve. Fill your tank in Escárcega or Xpujil. There are no gas stations inside the biosphere.
  • Bring food and water to the ruins. There is nothing to buy at the site.
  • Start early. The jungle is cooler in the morning, wildlife is more active, and you will have the ruins largely to yourself.
  • Overnight in Xpujil unless you are on a guided tour. Arriving in Xpujil after 4 PM means the ruins are closed for the day.
  • Rainy season (June–October): The jungle road can become muddy and slow. Check locally before driving a standard sedan. Tours and buses continue year-round.
  • Dry season (November–April): The best time to visit. Roads are in good condition, rain is minimal, and wildlife viewing is at its peak.
