5-Day Campeche Itinerary: City, Ruins, and Gulf Coast
Published
A practical five-day Campeche route — walled city days, Edzná, optional Calakmul overnight, Champotón coast, and how to pace heat and driving distances.

Trip shape
Five days lets you anchor in Campeche city, hit Edzná, sample the Gulf coast, and either preview Calakmul or go deep with an overnight near the reserve. This plan assumes a rental car for flexibility; adjust if you are bus-only.
Day 1 — Arrive and walk the walls
Check in, sunset malecón walk, dinner in centro. Light day — recover from travel.
Focus: Plaza de la Independencia, Puerta de Tierra, evening fort viewpoints.
Day 2 — Edzná morning, city afternoon
Leave by 7:30 for Edzná. Back by early afternoon — museum or café crawl.
Day 3 — Coast: Champotón
Drive west for seafood lunch and beach time. Return for a quiet evening in the walled grid.
Day 4–5 — Calakmul (choose your depth)
Option A — Overnight: Drive to Xpujil, early reserve entry Day 4, partial Río Bec sites Day 5, return to Campeche or exit via Chetumal/Cancún corridor.
Option B — Skip Calakmul: Add a second city day (markets, Fuerte de San Miguel) and a Cenote Miguel Colorado swim near Hopelchén.
Pace and packing
- Sun protection and refillable water for every ruin day.
- Light rain layer Jun–Oct.
- Book centro hotels before Day 1 if traveling in peak season.
Customize
Short on time? Drop Day 3 and keep Edzná + city walls. More time? Add Palizada or Ciudad del Carmen lagoon trips south.
