Escárcega to Calakmul: Bus, Car, and Xpujil Connection Guide
Updated
The practical guide to reaching Calakmul from Escárcega — covering bus transfers, driving the biosphere highway, Tren Maya connections, and the final Xpujil-to-ruins stretch.

Escárcega is the crossroads of southern Campeche. Highways 186 and 254 intersect here, the Tren Maya runs through town, and every traveller heading to Calakmul from the north or west passes through. Understanding how to use this junction efficiently saves hours of guesswork — and potentially a long walk through the jungle.
This guide covers every practical way to get from Escárcega to the Calakmul archaeological site, including the final 60-kilometre stretch through the biosphere reserve that catches some travellers off guard.
Why Escárcega Matters for Calakmul
Escárcega sits roughly at the midpoint of the Campeche-to-Chetumal corridor. For Calakmul-bound travellers, it serves three roles simultaneously: a refuelling stop, a transfer point between bus and taxi, and the last town with full services before the biosphere.
The town itself is not a destination. It grew up around the railway in the early 20th century and remains a functional transport hub — hotels, gas stations, ATMs, and simple restaurants line the main highway. Most travellers pass through in a few hours. Plan accordingly: arrive, transfer, continue south to Xpujil or east toward Chetumal.
The Route at a Glance
From Escárcega, the journey to Calakmul breaks into two distinct legs:
- Escárcega to Xpujil — approximately 130 km east on Highway 186, a well-maintained two-lane federal road passing through sparse ranchland and forest.
- Xpujil to Calakmul archaeological site — roughly 60 km south on the biosphere access road, a narrower paved track that slows to 30–40 km/h in places.
The total distance from Escárcega to the ruins is about 190 km. Driving time is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to Xpujil, plus another hour for the jungle stretch — roughly 3 hours 30 minutes total.
Bus: The Budget Option
Escárcega to Xpujil
Several bus operators run the Escárcega–Xpujil corridor. ADO and Autobuses Sur both serve this route, with departures typically in the morning and early afternoon.
- Duration: 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes
- Fare: 160–230 MXN per person (approximately $9–13 USD)
- Frequency: Multiple departures daily, but not hourly — check schedules the day before
- Ticket purchase: At the Escárcega bus terminal or online via ADO (international cards sometimes fail; booking at the terminal is more reliable)
The Escárcega bus terminal is centrally located, near the intersection of the main highways. Taxis from the town centre cost 30–50 MXN.
Transfer Option via Campeche
If you are coming from Campeche city, you can take an ADO bus to Escárcega (2–2.5 hours, 200–250 MXN) and transfer there to a second bus heading east to Xpujil. The total journey takes 5–6 hours including the transfer wait.
This is cheaper than a direct Campeche–Xpujil bus (which runs less frequently) but requires careful timing. Ask in Campeche about same-day connection options — the ADO staff can advise whether the transfer is feasible on a given day.
Xpujil to Calakmul (Final Stretch)
No public bus runs from Xpujil to the archaeological site. Your options are:
- Daily shuttle: Departs Xpujil at 8:00 AM from the town centre, 400 MXN per person round trip. Can stop at Volcán de los Murciélagos on request. Book through your hotel or the local cooperative.
- Private taxi: Approximately 1,200 MXN round trip for the vehicle. Better value for groups of three or more.
- Colectivos: Sporadic shared vans run when enough passengers gather. No fixed schedule — ask at the Xpujil market or your hotel in the morning.
Driving: The Most Flexible Option
Highway 186 — Escárcega to Xpujil
Tren Maya train passing through Escárcega, a key transit junction in southern Campeche
Highway 186 is in good condition — a paved, two-lane federal road with clear signage and light traffic. The drive from Escárcega to Xpujil takes about 2 hours 15 minutes at normal speeds.
Key driving notes:
- Fuel: Fill up in Escárcega. There is also a gas station at Conhuás near the biosphere entrance, but Escárcega has the last reliable stations before Xpujil.
- Speed bumps (topes): Present in small settlements and at the outskirts of Xpujil. Slow down through every town.
- Cell signal: Drops off between Escárcega and Xpujil. Download offline maps before leaving.
- Night driving: Not recommended. Wildlife crossings are common, and the road has no lighting.
Xpujil to Calakmul — The Biosphere Road
The final 60 km from Xpujil to the archaeological site is paved but narrow. In dry conditions (November–May) a standard sedan handles it fine. During rainy season (June–October) the road can be muddy in patches — check locally before committing with a low-clearance vehicle.
- Driving time: 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes
- Speed: 30–50 km/h typical
- No services on this road — bring water, snacks, and ensure you have fuel
At the biosphere entrance you will encounter three checkpoints. All fees are cash only — no ATMs exist inside the reserve.
| Checkpoint | Mexican nationals | International |
|---|---|---|
| Ejido Conhuás (community fee) | ~90 MXN | ~90 MXN |
| CONANP Biosphere Reserve | ~110 MXN | ~215 MXN |
| INAH Archaeological Site | ~100 MXN | ~100 MXN |
| Total | ~300 MXN | ~405 MXN |
- Reserve hours: 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM (no entry after 3 PM)
- Last access to archaeological site: 4:00 PM
- Site closes: 5:00 PM
Rental Car Notes
Rental cars are available in Campeche city and Escárcega (limited supply — book ahead). Expect 600–1,200 MXN per day for a standard sedan. A high-clearance vehicle is helpful during rainy season but not required in dry months.
Fuel for the round trip (Escárcega → Xpujil → Calakmul → return) runs approximately 1,400–1,800 MXN. Total trip cost including rental: 2,000–3,000 MXN.
Tren Maya: The Rail Option
The Tren Maya serves Escárcega with a station on the Cancún–Palenque line. From Escárcega, you can take the train east to Xpujil station (approximately 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes depending on the service).
- Frequency: Limited — typically a few departures per week on this segment. Check trenmaya.gob.mx for current schedules.
- Fare: Variable pricing; local class from approximately 90–270 MXN depending on demand and booking time.
- Booking: Online at trenmaya.gob.mx or at the station. International cards may have issues with the website.
Critical station warning: The Tren Maya lists both "Xpujil" and "Calakmul" as stations. Always book Xpujil station. The "Calakmul" station is isolated in the jungle with no services, no taxis, and no onward transport — travellers who book it are stranded 60+ km from Xpujil with no way to continue. This is the single most common booking error for this corridor.
From Xpujil station, you still need to arrange the final 60 km to the ruins via shuttle or taxi (see above).
Organised Tours
Several operators run day trips and overnight tours to Calakmul from Escárcega and Campeche city. These typically include transport, a guide, lunch, and entry fees.
- Cost: 3,000–5,500 MXN per person
- Duration: 1 day (long, departing early) or 2 days (with overnight in Xpujil)
- Booking: Available through Viator, GetYourGuide, or local agencies in Campeche city
Tours make sense if you want the archaeological context a guide provides and prefer not to manage the logistics yourself. For budget travellers, the bus + shuttle combination costs a fraction of the tour price.
Escárcega as a Stopover
If your journey requires an overnight stay — either because you arrive too late to continue or because the bus connection does not align — Escárcega has basic but functional accommodation.
Hotels: Hotel Colonial and Hotel Global Express both sit near the highway, offering air-conditioned rooms, parking, and basic amenities. Expect 500–900 MXN per night for a double room. Casados Ranch, slightly outside town on Highway 186, offers a more rustic option with good reviews for friendly service.
Food: The town has several casual restaurants serving regional food. Look for cocina económica set meals (comida corrida) at 60–90 MXN — a practical option if you are passing through. Mi Ranchito on the main road is a reliable choice for breakfast.
Services: ATMs (BBVA and Banorte have branches here), a Servifácil gas station on Avenida Solidaridad, pharmacies, and small grocery stores. This is your last chance to withdraw cash and stock up on water and snacks before the biosphere.
Climate: Escárcega is hot and humid year-round. May temperatures regularly exceed 38°C. If you are stuck here overnight, a hotel with air conditioning makes a practical difference.
Practical Tips
- Cash is essential. The biosphere checkpoints, Xpujil shuttles, and small-town services all operate on cash. Withdraw in Escárcega or Campeche city.
- Start early. The reserve closes at 3:00 PM. Leaving Escárcega by 7:00 AM gets you to the ruins by mid-morning with time to explore before the afternoon heat.
- Bring water and food. There are no services at the archaeological site. Two litres per person minimum, plus snacks.
- Insect repellent is non-negotiable — especially during rainy season.
- Time zone: All of Campeche State uses Central Time (UTC-6). No zone change on this route.
- Phone signal: Available in Escárcega and Xpujil, but disappears inside the biosphere reserve. Download offline maps and inform someone of your travel plans.
- Rainy season planning: June through October brings heavy afternoon rain. The biosphere road can become slippery. If driving a sedan, aim for dry-season travel or confirm conditions locally before setting out.
- Return logistics: The last shuttle from Calakmul back to Xpujil typically departs around 4:00–5:00 PM. Do not cut it too close — ask your driver for the confirmed return time when you arrive at the site.

Escárcega is a place you pass through, not a place you linger. Get your transport sorted, confirm the day's schedule, and keep moving south. The ruins are worth the journey — but only if you arrive with enough daylight to climb the pyramids and feel the scale of the jungle around you.
